Former Florida Doctor Liable for $100M After Infant's Injuries
In Palm Beach County, Fla., former doctor Berto Lopez has been found liable for $100 million in a medical malpractice case involving a botched infant circumcision. On August 27, a jury awarded the sum to the infant's parents after Lopez, who was practicing despite a pending license revocation, severed the child's penis during a procedure in February 2021. Lopez, a former OB-GYN with a 33-year career, had his medical license revoked by the Florida Board of Medicine due to previous malpractice issues, including the death of a patient, Onystei Castillo-Lopez, in 2017. Court records link Lopez to at least 14 serious injuries and six deaths over his career, involving cases of mishandled procedures and inadequate medical care. Despite the revocation of his license, Lopez continued to practice, leading to the severe injury of the infant. The case highlights the need for stricter oversight and enforcement of medical licensing regulations to protect patients from harm.
$5.6M Settlement for Woman Abused During Strip Search at California Prison
Christina Cardenas, the wife of a California inmate, will receive $5.6 million in a settlement after an intrusive strip search was conducted during a prison visit, her attorneys announced Monday. On September 6, 2019, Cardenas traveled four hours to the Tehachapi Correctional Facility to see her husband but was subjected to multiple invasive procedures including strip searches by prison officials, drug and pregnancy tests, and X-ray and CT scans. During one of the strip searches by a male doctor, she was sexually violated. Despite the absence of any contraband, Cardenas was denied her visit and later received invoices for over $5,000 for hospital services. The settlement includes $3.6 million from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the remainder from other defendants, including two correctional officers, a doctor, and Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley hospital. The settlement mandates new policies to better protect visitors' rights during searches. This case highlights ongoing issues of sexual abuse and misconduct in California prisons, with recent federal investigations into systemic abuses at several state-run facilities.

Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC is recalling all eggs branded “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market” following a salmonella outbreak that has affected 65 people in nine states. The recall affects all carton sizes and expiration dates of these brands. The outbreak has led to 24 hospitalizations, but no deaths have been reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The eggs were distributed to stores and restaurants in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, with cases also reported in Iowa, Colorado, California, Utah, Minnesota, and Virginia.
